By Cathy Fuhrman, Industry Manager of International Healthcare at OnBase by Hyland
In September 2016, NHS England named 12 trusts as Global Digital Exemplars. These trusts, identified as the most advanced in their use of technology, will become world leaders in digital adoption and patient centered care. The exemplars are tasked with developing sustainable digital transformation solutions that deliver measurable business value and can be replicated throughout the NHS.
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is one of those 12 Global Digital Exemplars. UHS serves 1.9 million people living in Southampton and South Hampshire. UHS works very closely with neigbouring mental health Trust, Southern Health, and community healthcare trust Solent to provide an integrated delivery network, addressing the health needs of their local population.
UHS is a centre of excellence for training doctors, nurses and clinicians of the future. They have a history of technological innovations as witnessed by the numerous honours awarded the trust. The Global Digital Exemplars being just one. They have a relentless focus on improving quality across all services and this reflects in their high ratings for patient and staff satisfaction.
They are on track to be paperless by 2020, thanks to the vision and direction of their leadership team. Today, as other trusts evaluate wholesale replacement of clinical systems with a single EPR, UHS has used the best of breed approach to achieve digitisation of the patient record. Adrian Byrne, director of IM&T at UHS, understands there are pros and cons to this incremental approach, as he wrote in a Digital Health Blog in 2013.
In 2015, UHS selected OnBase by Hyland as the latest element of the trust’s electronic patient record strategy, which is set to provide immediate access to health records. OnBase provides the enterprise content management platform that communicates with the trust’s various clinical systems to enable a single view of patient information to the provider. Additionally, UHS is leading the effort to deploy this solution on mobile devices throughout the trust.
During this year’s UK eHealth Week conference, you will hear updates from Adrian and his team about their journey to paperless and how OnBase by Hyland is helping them achieve their goal of quality patient care. Engage with UHS leaders as they discuss their exemplar journey. Hear what they hope to achieve, and how they plan to share their best practices with other NHS trusts.
